Emily E. Root joins Porter Wright's Health Law Group

COLUMBUS, Ohio, April 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Porter Wright continues to make strategic hiring moves by welcoming Emily E. Root to the firm. Root works in the firm's Columbus office, where her practice focuses primarily on health law. Root counsels and represents hospitals and health systems, provider joint ventures such as ambulatory surgery centers, and physicians regarding: health care regulatory matters; fraud and abuse; Medicare and other payor reimbursement; health care governmental appeals; medical staff hearings; board hearings; other adverse proceedings; and general health care.

Before joining Porter Wright, Root spent more than a decade assisting clients in assessing litigation and regulatory risks. She has significant experience evaluating business arrangements and physician contracts related to adherence with Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, and state anti-referral and anti-kickback laws, as well as conducting audits and investigations of potential fraud or overpayments and other compliance risks.

She also has experience litigating a broad spectrum of other health care matters including claims for reimbursement, unfair competition, breach of employment contracts, rate setting and exclusive arrangements. In addition, Root represents health systems and hospitals facing claims of alleged breaches of the HIPAA privacy and security rules before the Office of Civil Rights, as well as hospitals seeking to recover denied Medicare reimbursements before the Physician Reimbursement Review Board. She has successfully represented physicians, nurses, hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers in licensure matters before the State Medical Board, Board of Nursing, Ohio Department of Medicaid and the Ohio Department of Health.

Root earned her J.D. from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, summa cum laude; and received her B.A. from The Ohio State University, summa cum laude.
