Emery Law Firm 4.0kw Solar Parking Structure and Electric Car Charging Station Complete
TAOS, N.M., Aug. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Emery Law Firm's 4.0kw Grid Tied Photovoltaic Carport Canopy has been completed. Sol Luna Solar was selected to design and install the system, which will eliminate Emery Law's utility bill in addition to lowering their carbon footprint.
The carport structure will provide the company with shaded car parking for their electric car. In addition Emery Law has incorporated an electric car charging station that will allow the company to power their Chevy Volt Electric car.
Emery Law Firm applied (and is awaiting approval) for a USDA Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) Grant which provides compensation for energy improvements and modifications at rural business locations in New Mexico (i.e. Solar installations). The grant will reduce the system costs by 25%. In addition to the REAP benefits, Emery Law Firm will also take advantage of State and Federal Tax Credits as well as Accelerated Depreciation for Commercial Solar projects. The combination of REAP benefits, tax credits and use of the electric car will allow Emery Law Firm a 2 year payback on the actual expense of the array.
"We considered the investment in solar to be very good, financially as well as environmentally. With the federal and state tax credits, we were able to turn money we would have otherwise paid the government in taxes, into an asset on our property," owner Kelan Emery said. "The combination of an array that powers the law office, and additionally the new electric hybrid Volt helps us reduce our fossil fuel use. Since Taos' electricity comes from coal, that reduction is a benefit, and so is the 450 gallons of gas per year we are replacing by burning sunshine for a vehicle primarily used for commuting to work. "
Over the lifetime of the solar system, and in addition to generating energy savings, the solar system is expected to reduce Emery Law Firm's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by more than 275,000 pounds, which is equivalent to planting more than 2,800 tree seedlings, (information based on computations using data from the Environmental Protection Agency).
Emery Law Firm has received the distinguished support of the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department for their part in serving as a model company for rural businesses in the Northern New Mexico. The 4.0kw Carport will demonstrate the financial and environmental benefits associated with installing Solar at Commercial locations. Emery Law Firm hopes to see more solar car charging stations shading parking for every public building in America.
"We are excited to help our clients create new models for saving money and benefiting from safe investments (i.e. clean energy) by developing a new approach to Corporate responsibility," Sol Luna Solar owner Mark Johnson said. "Sol Luna Solar is pleased to see so many New Mexico businesses turning to Solar as a means to lower their overhead costs while leaving a 'cleaner and greener' mark on society."
