PHILADELPHIA, July 11, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- EMC Outdoor, in partnership with MMGY, was proud to bring Mt. Rushmore to Chicago's Millennium Park on Saturday, June 30th, as part of a spectacular event designed to help promote tourism to South Dakota and TravelSouthDakota.com.
The main attraction was the 1/3 scale Mt. Rushmore replica, which was over 20 feet high and weighed over 5000 pounds. Visitors could also test their skills on a rock climbing wall. The event featured South Dakota cuisine in the form of bison burgers and bison hot dogs, as well as ice cream from Thomas Jefferson's personal recipe that was trucked in from Mt. Rushmore just for the event.
"This type of 'surprise and delight' that we can offer in a city like Chicago produces very positive results for us," said Jim Hagen, Secretary of the Department of Tourism. "This time, we're bringing the sights and flavors of our unique state to Millennium Park. These events are inspirational to potential travelers to our state and inspire word-of-mouth marketing, which is one of the most powerful tools that we can use."
Rainy McGrew, EMC's Director of Insights and Development, said, "Contemporary tourists are seeking sharable and memorable experiences. Whether 'monumental' or on a smaller scale, events like this are ideal to promote tourism because they allow destinations to share a unique, authentic sensory experience. Actively engaging consumers in this way brings the idea of the destination to life, and allows them to immerse themselves in the potential travel experience."
Thousands of visitors stopped by to take selfies and enjoy the picnic and ice cream. The Mt. Rushmore replica will continue its tour with a stop at the Mall of America in Minneapolis.
