SAN DIEGO, May 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Embi Tec, creator of the MiniOne™ System, proudly sponsored the ASHG 2016 DNA Day Essay Contest by providing MiniOne Systems and monetary prizes. For the past several years, ASHG has held an annual DNA Day Essay Contest to commemorate both the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003 and the discovery of the double helix of DNA in 1953. This contest is open to students in grades 9-12 worldwide and asks students to examine, question, and reflect on important concepts in genetics. This year's ASHG DNA Day Essay contest boasted submissions from 44 states and 23 foreign countries!
This year's essay was to choose a genetic test that is currently available for a condition or disease that does not cause symptoms until adulthood (i.e., an adult-onset condition such as hereditary breast cancer). Describe how the test works and how certain the test results are. Then, either defend or refute the recommendation from http://www.ashg.org/press/201507-pediatric-testing.html
Embi Tec's sponsorship benefitted both students and teachers
This year's prizes included 10 MiniOne Systems for the teachers and cash prizes totaling $5,000 (split between the winning students and for genetics materials grant for their teachers). Winners were announced on DNA Day, April 25th. There was a 1st place winner, a 2nd place winner and two 3rd place winners. In addition 10 students received honorable mention.
