Elsevier Launches Harriet Lane Handbook Essay Contest
PHILADELPHIA, June 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
Contest encourages Harriet Lane Handbook users to discuss advancements in pediatric care for a chance to win one of three $1,000 prizes
Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, announced a call for submissions for the first ever Harriet Lane Essay Contest. Participants will submit a 500-word essay on the advancements in pediatric care as reflected in The Harriet Lane Handbook. The deadline for submissions is August 15, 2015. "We believe this essay contest is an ideal way to celebrate the Handbook's extensive history and content and also gather the impressions of medical students, residents and fellows about how pediatric care has advanced since the Handbook was first published in 1950," said Linda Belfus, Senior Vice President of Content, Elsevier Clinical Solutions. "The insights we receive from those on the front lines of pediatric care will help us better understand how the medical care and treatment of children has evolved and progressed."
The Harriet Lane Handbook is the first medical reference book on pediatric diagnosis and therapy written by pediatric residents with guidance from faculty advisors at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The 20th edition was released in 2014. Since its first edition, medical students, residents, physicians, nurses and other clinicians have relied on the Handbook for fast, accurate information on pediatric diagnosis and treatment. The Handbook is published every three years, with the chief residents as editors.
Winners of the essay contest will be announced during the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference & Exhibition, October 24-27, 2015, in Washington, D.C. Three winners, one from each of three categories, medical student, resident, and fellow/faculty, will each receive $1,000.
