Eleven Killed in Labor Day Weekend Crashes in Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Eleven people were killed and 262 others were injured in the 661 crashes investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police during the four-day Labor Day holiday weekend driving period. This total does not include crashes investigated by local police.

The official holiday driving period was Aug. 30 through Sept. 2. During that time, troopers cited 819 individuals for not wearing seat belts and issued citations to 111 motorists for not securing children in safety seats.

Troopers also issued 9,149 speeding citations and arrested 351 operators for driving under the influence. Of the 661 crashes investigated by state police, 77 of those crashes, including two of the fatal crashes, were alcohol related.

During last year's four-day Labor Day holiday driving period, six people died and 262 others were injured in 746 crashes to which state troopers responded.

The statistics cover only those crashes investigated by state police and do not include statistics on incidents to which other law enforcement agencies in Pennsylvania responded.
