Elephant defines distracted driving as any activity that detracts a motorist from keeping their eyes and ears on the road. Any non-driving activity that a driver engages in is potentially a distraction and could increase the risk of an accident, such as:
- Cognitive: Happens when a driver's mind is not focused on driving, such as carrying on a conversation with another passenger.
- Visual: Occurs when a driver looks at anything other than the road ahead, such as a GPS device or a cell phone.
- Manual: When a driver takes one or both hands off the wheel for any reason, such as eating or drinking, or grabbing something from a purse or wallet.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has estimated that, in 2012 alone, approximately 3,328 people were killed and another estimated 421,000 were injured in distracted driving-related crashes. The Department of Transportation (DOT) reports that five seconds is the average time your eyes are off the road while texting, therefore, when traveling at 55mph, that's enough time to cover the length of a football field, blindfolded.
"Distracted driving is a dangerous trend that at some point we will all witness," Brian Wakefield, Director of Operations at Elephant Auto Insurance. "Year-over-year distracted driving ranks as one of drivers top safety concerns. We think it is important for drivers to minimize distractions and recommend they take preventative steps to help reduce the occurrence of accidents related to distractive driving."
Elephant's distracted driving guides help drivers understand what distracted driving is, the risks associated with it, and how to avoid it. The guides also provide insight on how to spot distracted drivers, and what laws have been passed to minimize the activity. Elephant also provides links to other national distracted driving campaigns.
Elephant provides tips and easy techniques drivers can follow to stay safe on the roadways. Elephant encourages drivers to follow simple steps, such as turning off mobile devices and avoid eating or drinking while operating a vehicle.
