Elegant Virginia estate set to sell at auction
STANLEYTOWN, Va., April 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The home and land known simply as The Highlands has been featured in Virginia Living magazine and included in the Virginia Historic Garden Week. And on Thursday, May 7, it will sell at auction to the highest bidder over a published minimum bid of $525,000.
Originally built in 1938 for furniture executive W. Burton Dillard, the 13-acre estate – including the luxurious mansion, extensive gardens, rolling woodlands and a small creek -- is being auctioned by Woltz & Associates.
"It's astounding to me that this is only the second time in 77 years that this property has been offered for sale," said Jim Woltz, president of the auction company.
The 4,075-square-foot, five-bedroom home has such unique touches as a dining room with original hand-painted Thomas Gracie & Son wallpaper. The breakfast room has bird's eye maple cabinetry, and the elegant library features heart pine paneling, a wall of built-in bookcases and a limestone fireplace.
"This kind of craftsmanship and attention to detail is not only rare today, but virtually nonexistent," said Woltz. "The elegant paneling and woodworking reflects the kind of craftsmanship you'll see in the finest furniture. And the entire estate has been immaculately maintained. The landscaping – including a formal boxwood garden -- is incredible. The attractive minimum on this estate spells opportunity, because even if you could match the level of craftsmanship, it would cost many times more," said Woltz.
"Other architectural features include the original slate roof, copper gutters, leaded glass windows with limestone sills, and pegged oak floors," said Woltz.
The auction will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at the estate's manor house, 510 Edgewood Drive, Stanleytown. Woltz personnel will be available to accommodate inspections and provide detailed information from 2 to 5 p.m. on April 19, April 26 and May 3. Individuals seeking additional information may visit www.woltz.com or call the auction company at 540-342-3560.
