NEW YORK, Sept. 13, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Acker Merrall, the indisputable World's #1 Wine Auction firm, electrified the market with an incredible September auction that achieved over $5.5 Million of sales and nearly 200 World Records. The Amazing Collection of Wilf Jaeger, along with one even larger "Hall of Fame" collection set the pace for a high energy day on the sales floor. Over the first six months of the year, Bordeaux pulled closer to Burgundy in market share, but this sale had a decidedly dominant Burgundy flavor, which accounted for 50% of total sales and 122 of the World Records. International buyers took down over 50% of the overall sale, with Asia, led by China and Hong Kong, at over 40% and Brazil close to 10%. The quiet of summer is now officially long gone as Acker Merrall once again set the pace for the rest of the market with a sizzling September sale.
The Amazing Collection of Wilf Jaeger left successful buyers elated. Of the dozens and dozens of highlights and World Records, notable were the new records set for Rousseau, Dujac, DRC, Rouget, Colin-Morey, Ramonet, Raveneau, Rayas, Gentaz-Dervieux and Heitz Martha's Vineyard in addition to significant prices achieved for rare bottles of Bordeaux back to the 1920s and Rhones back to the 1940s. Wilf's collecting acumen and reputation definitely preceded his offering, and collectors battled furiously to acquire a few gems from his renowned collection. A great 2017 was made even more special for collectors and Acker Merrall through the excitement and privilege of offering some of Wilf's collection this past weekend.
The auction's Top 10 Lots were led by California, and an eighteen-bottle vertical of 1992-2011 Screaming Eagle selling at $46,930. Over 15% of the day's totals went to California wines, while Bordeaux accounted for 20%, led by a twelve bottle OWC of 1989 Petrus that sold for $43,225. Then two very rare magnums of 1988 Roumier Bonnes Mares Vieilles Vignes were fought over for $39,520, followed by a three bottle OWC of 2012 Romanee Conti also selling for $39,52, and a twelve bottle OCB of 1999 Rousseau Chambertin completed the auction's five highest selling lots at $34,580. Burgundy and Bordeaux continued their 2017 duel for supremacy as six magnums of 1999 Roumier Bonnes Mares sold for $29,640, as did a twelve bottle OWC of 1998 Petrus, just ahead of six magnums of 1989 Haut Brion bought for $27,170, as was a nine-bottle lot of 1996 DRC La Tache, with a methuselah of 1990 Ramonet Montrachet completing the auction's Top 10 at $24,700.
Burgundy is back on top with 50% of total sales and 122 New World Records. The firm also has a super September 23rd auction in Hong Kong, and together these two auctions project to over $10 million of sales this month.
Burgundy dominated the day's sales with over 50% of total proceeds. World Records fell from A to almost Z as that beautiful region claimed 122 new world records from producers such as d'Angerville, Arlot, d'Auvenay, Bachelet, Bertheau, Blain Gagnard, Boillot, Bouchard, Coche-Dury, Colin, Colin-Morey, Clos de Tart, Dancer, Drouhin, Dujac, DRC, Engel, Fourrier, Hudelot-Noellat, Lafon, Leflaive, Le Moine, Leroy, Liger-Belair, Lignier, de Montille, Meo-Camuzet, Mongeard-Mugneret, Mugnier, Ponsot, Ramonet, Rouget, Roulot, Roumier, and Vogue. Rousseau led the day's stunning results with seventeen new World Records, followed by DRC and Roumier with eight apiece. Dujac notched seven and Raveneau six.
"This is one of the strongest and most active years I have experienced in twenty years in the business. Today in New York only reinforced my belief that the market is in a great place as we begin our Fall season. People want their fine and rare wine more than ever, and we are ecstatic to be able to give them more of it than anyone else in the world," said John Kapon, Chairman of Acker Merrall and Condit Companies. "There were so many great offerings in this catalog, but, of course, having a collection like Wilf Jaeger's takes any given sale to another level. And Hong Kong is next on September 23rd! With mainly Chinese buyers accounting for over 40% of today's sale, it is clear that demand in Asia is as strong as ever, arguably the strongest in the market. When the curtain goes down on the last lot on the 23rd, September will be a $10 million month for Acker on the auction floor. Exciting stuff!"
