Electric Membership Cooperatives (EMCs) Report 64,000 Outages
TUCKER, Ga., Feb. 16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As of 10 p.m., Georgia's electric membership cooperatives (EMCs) are reporting approximately 63,000 customers in north Georgia without power, up from 15,000 earlier this evening. Outage numbers have increased this evening as temperatures have dropped and ice continues to accumulate on trees causing them to come in contact with power lines. Hard hit areas include Forsyth, Dawson, Lumpkin, Cherokee, Pickens, Towns, Hall, Gwinnett, Jackson and Banks Counties.
Crews will be working throughout the night to restore service as quickly and safely as possible. Customers should report power outages by contacting their local EMC and stay away from downed lines and report them immediately to their local utility or call 911.
Georgia EMC is the statewide trade association representing the state's 41 EMCs, Oglethorpe Power Corp., Georgia Transmission Corp. and Georgia System Operations Corp. Collectively, Georgia's customer-owned EMCs provide electricity and related services to 4.4 million people, half of Georgia's population, across 73 percent of the state's land area.
Note: Another update will be provided at 5 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 17.
