Elcomsoft Phone Breaker 5.0 Adds Over-the-Air Acquisition of iOS 9 Devices

ElcomSoft updates Elcomsoft Phone Breaker, adding support for over-the-air acquisition of Apple devices running iOS 9. Version 5.0 can download iCloud backups and iCloud Drive files saved by devices running the latest version of Apple's mobile OS, and becomes industry's first cloud acquisition tool for iOS 9.

Cloud Acquisition of iOS 9 

iOS 9 improves security at all points. iCloud device backups are moved into iCloud Drive (while still inaccessible via iCloud Control Panel). The structure and encryption of backups have changed. The new ATS (App Transport Security) protocol prevents traffic sniffing and rules out man-in-the-middle attacks.

With no possibility for the man-in-the-middle attack, the traditional research path was effectively shut. Developing support for over-the-air acquisition of cloud backups produced by iOS 9 devices required ElcomSoft to perform tremendous amounts of intense low-level research.

Physical acquisition remains unavailable for 64-bit hardware. No physical extraction method exists even for jailbroken devices running iOS 9, ruling out physical acquisition even on 32-bit hardware. Acquiring and analyzing iCloud backups may be the only available way to discover evidence in devices with unknown passcodes. Elcomsoft Phone Breaker 5.0 becomes the first (and so far the only) mobile forensic solution to download iOS 9 device backups.
