El Al Airlines Selects Pratt & Whitney's Environmental Friendly EcoPower® Engine Wash
PARIS, June 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- PARIS AIR SHOW – El Al Airlines signed a long-term agreement to use Pratt & Whitney's environmentally friendly EcoPower® engine wash system. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company.
Under the agreement, El Al will perform washes at Tel Aviv Ben Gurion International Airport, and Pratt & Whitney Global Service Partners will perform washes at John F Kennedy International Airport. The airline will also offer EcoPower wash service to other Israel-based airlines.
"Prior to using EcoPower engine wash, we used the conventional shepherd's hook method to wash our engines," said Eitan Shilo, Powerplant and Aircraft Systems Engineering Manager at El Al. "We switched to the EcoPower system because we recognized the incremental operational, environmental and cost benefits that the system offers. With EcoPower, we anticipate reducing our fuel burn by at least .6 percent."
"We are excited to provide El Al with a faster, more effective and environmentally sound solution for washing their engines," said Lou Quattrocchi, Pratt & Whitney Product Line Management vice president. "By using only pure atomized water, the EcoPower engine wash system provides a more thorough cleaning than conventional wash methods."
El Al, the national flag carrier of Israel, operates scheduled domestic and international services and cargo flights to Europe, North America, South America, Africa and Asia. The airline was ranked by IATA as one of the world's three most efficient air carriers.
Pratt & Whitney's patented EcoPower engine wash system reduces fuel burn by as much as 1.2 percent, eliminating approximately three pounds of carbon dioxide emissions for every pound of fuel saved, while also decreasing engine gas temperature, increasing the amount of time an engine can stay on wing. Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines. United Technologies, based in Hartford, Conn., is a diversified company providing high technology products and services to the global aerospace and commercial building industries.
