EIN News: 'Worst Floods of All Time' Hurtles Toward Budapest
WASHINGTON, June 7, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "We are facing the worst floods of all time," said Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban as he watched the Danube River rise to record levels at Budapest.
The flood crest of Europe's second longest river is set to hit 29 feet, higher than the Danube's previous record, which caused massive flooding in 2006. Thousands worked around the clock in Budapest to minimize flood damage.
The Danube is Europe's second-longest river, extending from Germany's Black Forest to the Black Sea bordering Romania and Ukraine. The river reached heights not seen in over 500 years in the German city of Passau and then inundated the village of Deggendorf, where hundreds had to be airlifted to safety.
Meanwhile, the surging Elbe River reached 21 feet above normal in Dresden, flooding parts of the city and requiring hundreds to evacuate. But the city's historic center was spared. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from other at-risk areas in Germany, where the flooding is worse than that recorded in 2002. Parts of the Czech Republic remained under water.
At least 16 deaths have been attributed to the flooding in Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic.
