WASHINGTON, June 14, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- From its west to east coasts, the U.S. has been hit by a rash of tornadoes, with forecasts of more to come.
Thursday, tornadoes caused damage in the Washington, D.C. area, and touched down up and down the eastern seaboard, delaying air traffic, knocking out power, and with associated heavy rain, flooding low-lying areas. A day earlier, the midwest, in Ohio and Illinois, saw widespread destructive tornado activity. Buildings were even destroyed by a tornado in the far west, in tiny McMinnville, Oregon.
All of this unusual tornado activity came as a New York State legislative report found that tornadoes in the state have increased by 600 percent during the past 40 years, with heightened frequency during the past decade.
In late May Oklahoma was hit by two of the strongest and largest tornadoes ever recorded, one measured at two and one-half miles wide. Both caused extensive damage and loss of life in the Oklahoma City area.
