EIN News Offers Latest News on Antibiotic-Resistant Salmonella
WASHINGTON, June 20, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The bacterium is known as "Salmonella Kentucky," and its rapid spread around the globe is of increasing concern to health researchers.
The Institut Pasteur in Paris and Morocco calls the antibiotic-resistant disease "astonishing" for how quickly it has moved through Africa and the Middle East. Canadian health authorities estimate that Salmonella Kentucky is now antibiotic resistant in 30 percent of that country's patients. Every patient had visited an African country within a week of developing symptoms.
According to the Pasteur study, Salmonella Kentucky can be traced to chickens and turkeys from Middle Eastern and African countries. It attributes the problem to what the study terms a "massive overuse" of antibiotics in African poultry farming.
Salmonella Kentucky was first isolated in 2002 in a French tourist who had visited Egypt. The bacterium now infects hundreds of patients each year in Morocco.
