WASHINGTON, June 3, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Hawaii is the sixth state to report confirmed cases of hepatitis A, an outbreak traced to a frozen berry blend sold in Costco stores. Costco has removed the product from its shelves.
Dozens of cases have been identified in Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and California as well as Hawaii. Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease that can last from a few weeks to several months and can be fatal. More cases are likely since symptoms of hepatitis A do not appear until weeks after infection.
The berry mix originated at Townsend Farms, a Fairview, Oregon supplier. The product is packaged as Townsend Farms Organic Anti-Oxidant Blend and is often used in frozen yogurt. A spokesman for Townsend said that the pomegranate seeds in the blend were imported from Turkey.
Those who consumed the berry mix were urged by health authorities to immediately get a hepatitis A vaccine shot, which can prevent the illness if given within two weeks of exposure.
