EHE International Responds to Controversial New Multivitamin Research
NEW YORK, Dec. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to research recently published in the Annals of Internal Medicine suggesting that multivitamin supplements are not useful in maintaining health, EHE International's Vice President of Medical Affairs, Dr. Susan Spear, issued the following statement:
"It is important not to get carried away by broad headlines that do not take every individual situation into account and only offer so much information. While the findings published in the Annals of Internal Medicine do indicate that not everyone will benefit from multivitamins, the cases in question focused on select study groups that were not representative of the entire population. Every individual case is unique, based on a person's medical history, background, lifestyle, diet and other factors. Before determining whether to include or eliminate multivitamins from your nutritional routine, consult with a doctor who knows you and is familiar with your medical history. EHE recommends an annual physical exam and doctor consultation as part of any prevention or wellness program.
"There is no magic pill that takes the place of following a lifestyle that includes a nutritionally balanced diet, sufficient amounts of physical activity and avoidance of toxic substances such as tobacco. That said, when over-the-counter dietary supplements are recommended by a physician or other qualified healthcare professional, it should be followed by a 'quality' discussion; not all supplements are equal."
