Education Secretary Teams Up With GEAR UP Architect for National Day of Recognition

WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), architect of the highly successful and nationally acclaimed early college awareness program – Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness Undergraduate Program (GEAR UP) – will headline a live, multi-state event that celebrates and encourages the work of GEAR UP projects across the country.
The Secretary and Congressman will host a video conference with GEAR UP project directors from around the country to discuss their current initiatives such as stakeholder engagement, student counseling, college and career exploration, school culture, academic preparation and parental involvement.
Over the past 10 years, more than $3 billion in federal funds have been used to serve some 12 million students in 49 states, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. GEAR UP serves as an international model to aid underserved students in their preparation and pursuit of a college education.
