EDMI selects Sierra Wireless AirPrime(TM) intelligent embedded modules for global smart meter deployments

Mk7C advanced electronic meter with intelligent embedded modules from Sierra Wireless enable customers to control power consumption and read meters in real time

VANCOUVER, April 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR; TSX: SW) today announced that EDMI has selected Sierra Wireless AirPrime(TM) WMP100 intelligent embedded modules to integrate into its advanced Mk7C electronic energy meter to service the growing global smart meter market. Initial volume shipments will occur this month in the United Kingdom, with additional meter deployments in markets in Europe, New Zealand and Asia following later in 2010.

The Mk7C is an advanced Class 1 single phase electronic meter offering fully integrated AMI functionality in a compact profile. The Mk7C integrates a 100amp relay which allows disconnection and reconnection of electrical services remotely. Based on the EDMI Atlas series of meters, the Mk7C delivers a future proof energy meter for both Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Smart Grid rollouts without having to compromise on cost, features or size. EDMI meters with embedded wireless technology offer reliable, cost effective communication, enhance the efficiency of electric power distribution, and provide additional smart services to end customers who can control their power consumption in real time.

EDMI's collaboration with Sierra Wireless began in 2004, when EDMI selected Wavecom modules for large GPRS smart meter deployments throughout the UK, followed by several major deployments of smart metering solutions in Europe, South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Africa. Sierra Wireless acquired Wavecom in 2009 and incorporated Wavecom modules into the Sierra Wireless AirPrime product line.
