Edison Nation Medical Announces Open Innovation Search Focused on Senior Mobility Products
Organization Seeks to Identify and Commercialize Product Innovations that Improve Quality of Life for Seniors
CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Edison Nation Medical, the premier healthcare innovation marketplace, today announced a worldwide search for product innovations to assist seniors in staying mobile and independent. The most promising ideas uncovered during the 8-week search will be presented to major medical manufacturing partners for potential commercialization. Invention ideas can be submitted through a secure, confidential portal at www.EdisonNationMedical.com/Mobility now through May 28, 2015.
The objective of the Senior Mobility search is to uncover ideas for products, assistive devices, technologies or applications that aid the burgeoning senior population in remaining mobile, safe and independent. Relevant products cover a broad array of categories, including but not limited to:
- Walkers, rollators and canes
- Wheelchairs and mobility scooters
- Transfer devices
- Support and grab bars
- Lifts, trapezes and standers
- Devices to increase independence and safety in the kitchen and bathroom
The population of older Americans is expanding rapidly, from 43.1 million in 2012 to a projected 70 million by 2030. For many seniors, having a high quality of life and living independently is often more important than longevity. Assistive devices are increasingly needed in order to provide an elevated quality of life through the prevention of falls and by allowing for continued access and mobility of seniors. Furthermore, assistive devices are often used by caregivers to safely transport and care for seniors.
"About 80 percent of older Americans live with at least one chronic disease, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the impact of these diseases is often dramatic. Chronic illnesses can affect seniors' mobility, fall risk, energy, and ability to live independent lives, which in turn affects their ability to socialize and maintain relationships as they've done in the past," states Bobby Grajewski, president of Edison Nation Medical. "Our Senior Mobility search enables those individuals closest to the challenges of senior mobility - namely, physicians, nurses, caregivers and the seniors themselves - to have a very real impact on care and quality of life going forward."
Born out of collaboration between consumer product development and open innovation firm, Edison Nation, LLC and Carolinas HealthCare System, one of the largest public health system in the United States, Edison Nation Medical has deep expertise across the entire innovation lifecycle: gathering, evaluating, validating, designing/prototyping, and commercializing healthcare ideas. All ideas submitted to the search will be vetted through a confidential, proprietary 8-stage process led by Edison Nation Medical's team of medical, technical, intellectual property, and market commercialization experts.
The end goal of this search is for Edison Nation Medical to successfully commercialize each qualified invention on behalf of the inventor via licensing to a larger global manufacturing partner or via company incubation. When successful, Edison Nation Medical shares licensing royalties and revenues with the inventor. The search is open to the public, and individual inventors or small businesses worldwide are invited to submit inventions to www.EdisonNationMedical.com/Mobility through Thursday, May 28, 2015.
