TORONTO, Nov. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ - On November 8, 2011 EdgeWalk at the CN Tower was presented with the Guinness World Record for the "Highest External Walk on a Building".
Carey Low, the Guinness World Records® Canadian Representative, presented the certificate to Jack Robinson, Chief Operating Officer of the CN Tower on the EdgeWalk itself, 356m/1,168ft above the ground!
"I am personally delighted to award this certificate to the CN Tower; this is an opportunity for them to be part of the 2011 Guinness World Records Day in advance of the 17th November," said Low. "The EdgeWalk is a particularly exciting record, and will be listed as: The highest external walk on a building is located 356 m (1,167.97 ft) above the ground, running full-circle around the roof of 360 The Restaurant at the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada. Participants experience a "hands-free", harness-secured "EdgeWalk" along a 150-m-long (492-ft) ledge just 1.5 m (5 ft) wide."
"We are thrilled to bring a close to an extremely successful first season of EdgeWalk in this special way with Guinness World Records!" said Robinson. "It has been inspiring to see the enthusiastic response to this new unique urban adventure over the last three months. Exciting new experiences like EdgeWalk provide another reason to add Toronto to everyone's travel list."
Mark Laroche, President and CEO of Canada Lands Company, the owner and operator of the CN Tower, views being recognized by Guinness World Records as one more reason to celebrate this exciting and creative addition to Canada's iconic building. "At Canada Lands, we are in the business of revitalizing properties to optimize their value for the communities in which they are located. In many ways, the addition of EdgeWalk renews and revitalizes the CN Tower as a destination of choice by adding one of the most exciting new recreational venues in Toronto in over two decades," said Laroche.
EdgeWalk opened to the public on August 1, 2011 and is the CN Tower's most thrilling attraction in its 35 year history, and the first of its kind in North America. It is the world's highest full circle hands-free walk on a 5 ft (1.5 m) wide ledge encircling the top of the Tower's main pod. Visitors walk in groups of six, while attached to an overhead safety rail via a trolley and harness system. Trained EdgeWalk guides encourage participants to push their personal limits, allowing them to lean back over Toronto with nothing but air and breathtaking views of Lake Ontario beneath them.
During this busy shorter first season EdgeWalk exceeded all booking expectations welcoming more than twice the number expected to walk atop one of the world's greatest man-made wonders. Walkers as young as 13 and as young at heart as 90 experienced EdgeWalk. Many embraced the unique opportunity to organize special walks including marriage proposals, birthday and anniversary celebrations and corporate team building and client appreciation EdgeWalks, often followed by dinner at 360 Restaurant.
Designed with the highest international safety and security standards in mind, EdgeWalk runs 1.5 hours, with the outdoor walk lasting approximately 30 minutes.
