EDGE 'Work In Progress Issue' Explores Diversity in the Garden State
Regina King, Kathrine Narducci & Maz Jobrani featured in Q&A's.
ELIZABETH, N.J., June 20, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- If America is a nation of immigrants, then New Jersey is "America on steroids." Indeed, as much as any state in the nation over the past three-plus centuries, New Jersey has been defined—culturally, socially, politically and economically—by its newcomers. The summer issue of EDGE Magazine celebrates the state's remarkable diversity as part of its Work In Progress theme.
Three accomplished entertainers weigh in on the subject in exclusive Q&A's: Emmy winner Regina King, Sopranos star Kathrine Narducci, and Iranian-born comic actor Maz Jobrani.
King, who earned critical acclaim most recently for her work in American Crime, talks to Gerry Strauss about her body of work (which stretches back to the sitcom 227) and her chemistry with talented artists such as director John Singleton and actor Cuba Gooding, Jr.
"That's a very common thing in the industry," says King. "People who have a good working relationship and grow together, continuously work together."
Narducci, who recently co-starred with Robert DeNiro in HBO's The Wizard of Lies, tells Tracey Smith the story of her initial meetings with the iconic actor during the casting of A Bronx Tale. Narducci claims she didn't have the jitters until after she got the part.
"I showed up at work the first day and he goes, 'You know, you need to know you beat twenty-five hundred girls." I wasn't nervous until that point!"
Jobrani, a member of the Axis of Evil comedy tour who currently stars on the CBS sitcom Superior Donuts, talks about how he survived grade school as an immigrant: skill at kickball, bribing classmates with candy, and being funny.
"I like laughing and making people laugh…and I stuck with it."
The Work In Progress issue also features a historical overview of immigration in New Jersey, entitled Who We Are/Where We Came From by Mark Stewart and Close to Home, a roundup of go-to authentic ethnic cuisine spots in central New Jersey, by Andy Clurfeld.
