ATLANTA, Dec. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- EDENS announces its acquisition of Toco Hills Shopping Center, adding to its ownership of the adjoining Toco Hills Promenade. Originally developed by Clyde Shepherd Jr. in 1956, the center is surrounded by Emory University, the Centers for Disease Control and several hospitals.
Originally a Shepherd family home, the center has been an integral part of the surrounding communities for generations. According to Atlanta-area legend, "Toco" is a phrase that Shepherd learned from a Brazilian Indian, meaning "have better luck than you think you'll have."
Today's center is a neighborhood favorite largely because of the efforts of Clyde Shepherd III, the founder's son. EDENS envisions bringing a cohesive feel to the shops and restaurants facing North Druid Hills Road through design and a diverse retail mix. In total, EDENS controls over 300,000 square feet of the center on 27 acres.
"Toco Hills is a legendary shopping center in Atlanta. We feel very fortunate that the Shepherd family has entrusted us as stewards of this property, and our goal is to continue their vision of the center as a community hub," says Herbert Ames, Vice President – Southeast.
EDENS owns and operates several other shopping centers in the Atlanta area, including Buckhead Market Place, Sandy Plains Centre and Merchant's Walk. Their focus on unique merchandise mix and classic design creates a collection of local, regional and national retail – giving shoppers many reasons to visit.
