COLLEGE PARK, Md., Sept. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Ed Snider, chairman of Comcast Spectacor and founder of the Philadelphia Flyers, will be the guest speaker for the BB&T Colloquium on Capitalism, Ethics, and Leadership hosted by the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015 in Van Munching Hall's Frank Auditorium.
Snider will discuss "Enterprising Entertainment: Ethics and Leadership in the Sports Industry" with Rajshree Agarwal, director of UMD's Ed Snider Center for Enterprise and Markets.
During the event, sponsored by BB&T, Agarwal and Snider will explore enterprise by individuals and firms, the intersection of enterprise, society, and government, and the role of educational institutions in fostering the next generation of creativity and innovation.
Snider is a lifelong entrepreneur. He graduated with a degree in accounting in 1955 from the University of Maryland and started his first business from the back of his car. In 1966, he "risked it all" by mortgaging his home and founding the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team. The success of the franchise spawned a variety of media and entertainment-related companies that today operate worldwide. Snider's Foundation contributes widely to the Philadelphia community, including creating the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation, an organization that provides thousands of high-risk, inner-city children with hockey instruction and league competition together with mentoring, homework help, and a life-skills program.
In 2014, Snider founded the Ed Snider Center for Enterprise at the University of Maryland. The center engages in interdisciplinary research that fosters an understanding of the kind of institutions that promote innovation and enterprise and conducts public outreach through teaching, programs, and media. The Charles Koch Foundation provided additional support for the Ed Snider Center.
