Ectaco SpeechGuard® Assists Military Linguists
The Defense Language Institute's Foreign Language Training Center utilizes SpeechGuard® to supplement their student's formal language instruction
NEW YORK, Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ectaco SpeechGuard® continues to grow in response to the resounding language translation needs of local, state, and federal agencies. The handheld speech-to-speech device was initially requested by the Department of Defense to be developed for translation use by the military. It has subsequently become used by many, including law enforcement and Homeland Security divisions throughout the United States. The Defense Language Institute's Foreign Language Training Center, based in Fort Huachuca, Arizona is providing students of their arduous linguistic programs with SpeechGuard® units.
SpeechGuard® not only has speech-to-speech, text-to-speech, and text-to-text capabilities, but also a plethora of educational applications such as Cultural Notes, Language Teacher, Audio Phrasebook, and CIA World Factbook. Cultural Notes enlightens users about Modern Arab-Islamic Traditions. Language Teacher is an audio-visual tutorial that instructs a user through a procession of the target language's alphabet, basic words, common phrases, and dialogue with instant critique and feedback. Language dictionaries provide instant definitions to assist with comprehension and translation. Ectaco's Audio Phrasebooks contain over 14,000 commands, phrases, and questions separated by topics contingent on users' needs. CIA World Factbook is a reference resource produced by the CIA with profiles of countries and territories around the world.
The handheld and pocket sized SpeechGuard® is very easy to operate and takes 15-20 minutes of handling to get familiarized with its use. Users can speak a command, phrase, or question into SpeechGuard® and be instantly understood in numerous languages based on the modification. Modifications include PD-5 (Law Enforcement), GI-5 (Military), HS-5 (Homeland Security), and MD-5 (Medical). "In lieu of them buying many different handheld language aids we develop, we deemed it convenient to combine all of their best attributes into a single device", says David Lubinitsky, Ectaco's President. "The ability to effectively communicate with people and provide them with necessary support and assistance without language barriers is paramount."
