PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., July 27, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- ECRI Institute's new white paper shows value analysis leaders how to apply an analytic framework to the value analysis process to improve consistency and efficiency, and remove bias.
"Value Analysis: Best Practices for Navigating the Evidence Maze," available for free download, demonstrates how the PICOTS analytic framework bridges clinical and administrative interests to help value analysis committees make evidence-based decisions on new product selections and implementation.
The PICOTS acronym stands for patient population, intervention, comparators, outcomes, timeframe for follow-up, and care setting. Applying the proven framework adds clarity and focus for developing key questions to address and identify evidence and evidence gaps. PICOTS brings a systematic, objective, and transparent process to decision making.
The white paper features three recent real-world case studies based on ECRI Institute's work with hospitals and health systems. Each example illustrates how ECRI Institute helps providers strengthen their value analysis process by asking the right questions and searching for the appropriate evidence. The cases describe point-of-care pregnancy testing, demineralized bone matrix, and a virtual reality device for pediatrics.
"Evidence, safety, and clinical trial information, while important to every healthcare decision, are only part of the picture. Context matters too, and the PICOTS framework gives value analysis committees a way to connect with clinical concerns and show their work, so to speak, on every decision they make," says Diane C. Robertson, director, Health Technology Assessment Information Service, ECRI Institute.
As an Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC), ECRI Institute helped refine the PICOTS framework. ECRI Institute has been designated as an EPC by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for 20 years.
ECRI Institute recently released ValuVu™, a product evaluation workflow application that integrates the Institute's clinical evidence analysis, safety, and pricing data into a transparent, easy-to-use platform. It has the flexibility and functionality to improve value analysis decision making at hospitals and health systems.
