Program with International Association of Machinists President R. Thomas Buffenbarger and Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch Director Lori Wallach |
Tom Buffenbarger is the 13th International President of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). Founded in 1888, the IAM has over 700,000 active and retired members in North America, who work in a numerous industries including, manufacturing, defense, electronics, and shipbuilding to name a few. It is the largest union in the world in the aerospace and air transportation industries. Buffenbarger is also a member of the AFL-CIO Executive Council and serves as a Vice-President of Industrial, a global union federation. Under President Buffenbarger, the IAM has consistently fought against NAFTA, FTAA, and all trade agreements modeled on NAFTA, including the recently implemented agreements with Colombia and South Korea. Whether in the streets of Seattle or Miami, during WTO and FTAA ministerial meetings, President Buffenbarger has tirelessly argued for a new template for trade agreements: a template that works for U.S. workers and improves the lives of working men and women throughout the world.
Lori Wallach has promoted the public interest regarding globalization and international commercial agreements in every forum. Her most recent book is The Rise and Fall of Fast Track Trade Authority (2013). She also wrote Whose Trade Organization? A Comprehensive Guide to the WTO (2004) and has contributed to numerous anthologies. Wallach's work in "translating" arcane trade legalese – indeed, entire trade agreements – into relevant, accessible prose and connecting people's lived experiences with trade pacts' legal requirements, has helped empower more diverse participation in trade and globalization discussions. Wallach, a graduate of Wellesley College and Harvard Law School, previously worked on Capitol Hill, on electoral campaigns, and in television news.
