SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- With the release of the latest version of its native cloud-based central management system, LumInsight® Cloud CMS, and its new LumInsight IoT Gateway, Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) has completed a top-to-bottom re-architecture of its intelligent connected outdoor lighting control system. Solutions based on this new architecture are now shipping to multiple cities deploying connected lighting at city-wide scale.
The updated LumInsight connected outdoor lighting control system incorporates a new level of distributed intelligence that helps users maximize their lighting control capabilities today while setting the stage for incorporation of Echelon and third party smart city applications in the future. The distributed intelligence in Echelon's solution, with the ability to collect data and run programs at the very edge of the network, enables greater scalability, flexibility, ease of use and extensibility to current and future applications.
Echelon's LumInsight system consists of four primary new or updated components: a cloud-based central management system, programmable IoT edge server gateways, and intelligent control nodes that connect both wirelessly and using the power line to communicate:
The Echelon LumInsight 2.1 Cloud CMS is an upgrade to Echelon's CMS platform that allows cities and campuses to control and monitor lighting schedules and levels by pole, street, neighborhood, or city. The LumInsight 2 Cloud CMS can also be used to access and control a wide variety of smart city applications and devices, and features an open API to enable third party developers and system integrators to expand the system's capability. The secure, easy-to-use system allows managers to customize reports, alarms, and the interface for different authorized users.
The Echelon LumInsight IoT Gateway is a new edge server with distributed intelligence for managing and monitoring infrastructure across a city-wide network. This next generation gateway places more intelligence closer to the edge of the network, providing greater performance and reliability; local processing power supports adaptive capabilities and reduces network latency, and enables operation in case of network failures. This gateway provides LumInsight 2 Cloud CMS the data it needs to manage a multi-site network, and features an open programmable and extensible interface that enables future smart city devices and applications, as well as integration with existing smart building and industrial automation systems.
The new Echelon TOP900TLX-E, an addition to the TOP900 family of controllers, is a compact, plug-and-play wireless connected lighting control node targeted at large utility and municipal markets in the Americas. In addition to having the intelligence to collect and store data and run operational programs, this new product adds built-in GPS capabilities to simplify installation, revenue grade metering for tracking electricity use by fixture, a tilt-sensor to provide automatic alerts of pole knock-downs from accidents or natural disasters, and continual reports on light status, electricity consumption and diagnostic information.
The new Echelon LumInsight CLP4000 Power Line Lighting Controller is designed for connected smart lighting applications using reliable and secure communications over the power line. This controller is ideal for applications such as tunnels and decorative lighting fixtures. The CLP4000 features faster and smarter transceiver technology, multiple luminaire control options, and native support for advanced analog and digital sensors.
Municipalities and large educational and commercial campuses have increasingly come to realize that incorporating smart controls like the LumInsight connected lighting system into their outdoor LED upgrade plans from the beginning is a smart decision. Echelon's award winning platform is at the forefront of this technology shift in the "smart city" space.
"Piggybacking a complete streetlight network control solution like Echelon's onto an LED upgrade project provides immediate results and prepares municipal infrastructure for emerging Smart City use cases," said Dan DeLong, President, Architectural Lighting Designs, Minneapolis, Minn.
"Smart Controls are the only way to make sure that public lighting systems can keep up with future demands for new IOT services, while immediately reducing negative impacts on human health and the environment. Echelon LumInsight is certified by SOLA for the Community Friendly Lighting Program and should be considered by cities as part of their lighting upgrade plans." said Bob Parks, Executive Director, Smart Outdoor Lighting Alliance.
Echelon has been at the forefront of technology innovation and advancement in robust distributed intelligence control systems for almost 30 years," said Ron Sege, Chairman and CEO of Echelon. "The recent trend by owners of large outdoor lighting systems, such as city-wide and campus-wide streetlight grids, to retrofit old lighting technology with new energy saving LEDs has given us an opportunity to apply our unique expertise to further reduce customer costs and improve safety and quality of life in outdoor environments."
