And sure, authorities spent $200,000 retrofitting the 1979 Rolls Royce, adding bullet-proof glass and armor plating, sealing windows against possible noxious gas attack, and installing an intercom system so that conversations with those outside would not require an open door or window.
And yeah, this ride has a pedigree unlike any other. It's the documented, embassy-owned Silver Wraith II that squired none other than Princess Diana and Prince Charles during her first-ever visit to the United States in 1985.
Now imagine picking up this beauty for a song. No way? Yes way. Anything's possible as the lustrous silver Rolls with red leather interior is put up for no-reserve auction Friday, Nov. 9.
That's right. No reserve. No kidding.
The Volo Auto Museum is auctioning the Rolls, along with seven other celebrity cars on eBay. The auction began Friday, November 9th and will end the morning of Friday, November 16th. Bidding starts at 10 a.m. Central Standard Time and will remain open one week.
You don't need fat stacks of cash to get in on the fun. You need only an eBay account — and to dream a little.
Just think; Twenty-seven years ago this month the United States welcomed her Royal Highness for her first visit. In this very car. And yours could be the bid that clinches the keys. It could be $50,000, $150,000 — or it could be $5,000.
Rolls Royce not your fancy? Well, how about the 1990 Chevrolet Lumina NASCAR from "Days of Thunder" or Jon Bon Jovi's 2003 BMW 745 LI? These and more await visitors to the Volo Auto Museum eBay auction. A portion of proceeds will go to CHILDREN with CANCER UK, which Princess Diana inaugurated in 1988.
Be a part of this history-making event. Go online to www.volocars.com and place your eBay Bid.
And if you want to see what all of the fuss is about, don't delay. This fit-for-royalty Rolls will be on display at the museum, 27582 Volo Village Road, Volo, IL, through Nov. 18 only. After that, it's off to its new owner, and the public's chance to view Diana's gleaming chariot might be gone forever.
