WASHINGTON, June 25, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Easter Seals strongly supports the decision of the United States Supreme Court in the King vs Burwell case. The Supreme Court's decision in this case means that individuals and families in all 50 states, whose incomes are below 400 percent of the federal poverty line, will continue to be eligible for financial aid to help cover the cost of health insurance premiums.
"The goal of the health care reform law is to assure that all people have access to quality, affordable health care. Access to the health care system is integral to the goal of enabling all Americans, including people with disabilities and chronic conditions to be healthy, functional, live as independently as possible and participate in their communities," said Randall L. Rutta, the president and CEO of Easter Seals. "We do not want to return to the days when people had to decide whether to pay for their health insurance or pay their rent," remarked Rutta.
The Affordable Care Act directly and immediately impacts the lives of people with disabilities and chronic conditions by building a system where their health care needs can be met.
From the ending of pre-existing condition exclusions from coverage to allowing children up to age 26 to remain on their parents' policies, the delicate balance of the this law provides a critical path to appropriate and high quality health care services which is essential for people with disabilities to live, learn, work and play in their communities.
"The King vs Burwell decision means subsidies will continue to be available in all the states, and Easter Seals will continue to support individuals and their families having the opportunity to access quality health care services without facing bankruptcy," stated Rutta.
Had the High Court ruled otherwise, access to quality health care plans for as many as 6.4 million people would have been jeopardized.
