East Asian LNG at Post-Fukushima Low Amid Dwindling Demand

East Asian front-month spot LNG prices have fallen to their lowest levels since March 2011 amid lacklustre demand in the region. However, traders anticipate a strong rebound in early negotiations for deliveries over the coming winter.

ICIS LNG Analyst, Simon Ellis, reports on August LNG contract prices using the ICIS East Asia Index (EAX), which is calculated using an arithmetic average of the delivered ex-ship (DES) front month and second month ahead assessments for Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China. The index provides a measure of the commodity's value across the East Asia region and is a reliable LNG reference price for the region as it incorporates a wider pool of demand centres.
