Applied Materials Inc. Analyst Notes
On May 15, 2014, Applied Materials, Inc. (Applied Materials) reported financial results for Q2 FY 2014 (period ended April 27, 2014). Applied Materials generated Q2 FY 2014 net sales of $2.3 billion, up 7.4% QoQ, driven by growth in Silicon Systems. The Company reported non-GAAP net income of $348 million or $0.28 per diluted share, versus $199 million or $0.16 per diluted share in Q2 FY 2013. Both revenue and EPS figures were in line with the analysts expected values polled by Thomson Reuters. Gary Dickerson, President and CEO, said, "We are also delivering significant improvements in our financial performance and have expanded our operating margins to their highest level in nearly three years." For Q3 FY 2014, the Company expects non-GAAP diluted EPS to be in the range of $0.25 to $0.29. Shares in the Company jumped 8.13% to settle at $20.21 in the next trading session. Google Inc. Analyst Notes
On May 16, 2014, Reuters reported that Google Inc. (Google) and Apple Inc. (Apple) have decided to settle all patent litigations between them over smartphones, putting an end to the high-profile technology lawsuits. "Apple and Google have also agreed to work together in some areas of patent reform," the joint statement by both the companies, as quoted by Reuters, read. According to the Reuters report, the Companies stated that the settlement does not include a cross license to their respective patents. Both the Companies have asked a federal appeals court in Washington to dismiss their cases against each other. International Business Machines Corp. Analyst Notes
On May 16, 2014, International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) announced that a new group of companies are creating Watson-powered cognitive computing intelligence applications. The IBM Watson Group announced that three new partners are building apps for various purposes ranging from assisting investors in making precise judgments based on market insights from trade floors full of data, to helping a dermatologist to find out the most effective skin cancer treatment option, to cautioning retailers about the right time to push their game-time snacks display to the store front so as to help grow sales.
