"Building teams and building companies is what I love to do," said Abrams in her acceptance speech. "I am most proud of my nine years at Dwell. I believed that simply accepting the convention of publishing was not an option. I knew that the founding mission was strong, I knew that if we stayed true to that mission Dwell would find its way into the hearts and minds of trade professionals and design enthusiasts. Eight platforms later I can safely say we did it. And, we will prove again in 2012 that we still have the vitality, credibility and vision to take this brand to new heights."
"EWIP honors Michela O'Connor Abrams with the 2012 Exceptional Woman in Publishing award in recognition of her long-standing commitment to a culture of spirited innovation, diversity, and publishing excellence," said Claudia Smukler of EWIP. "We salute her leadership and the unbounded energy she has for orchestrating the collaborations necessary to fuel a media brand in the 21st century."
In a letter from Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic Leader congratulated Abrams and applauded the EWIP for providing "examples of great partnerships and collaborations, and [providing attendees with] opportunities to interact with innovative leaders" in publishing and media.
EWIP has bestowed this honor since 1999 on outstanding female leaders in media and publishing such as Gloria Steinem, Katrina vanden Heuvel of The Nation, Laurel Touby, founder of mediabistro.com, and Ardath and Marie Rodale of Rodale, Inc.
