WAUKESHA, Wis., June 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Cardiac Science announced today that the Duval County Public Schools in Florida will be the first U.S. school system to receive the new Powerheart® G5 automated external defibrillator (AED).
The Powerheart G5 is the first FDA-cleared AED to offer a combination of automatic shock delivery, dual-language functionality, variable escalating energy, and rapid shock times. Cardiac Science designed the Powerheart G5 to enable anyone, from a first-time user to a professional rescuer, to respond to a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) incident.
The Duval County Public Schools, serving the area surrounding Jacksonville in Northeast Florida, make up the 20th largest school district in the nation. The system serves 125,000 students in more than 180 schools. The 11 new Powerheart G5s will be used to enhance safety for the middle schools' outdoor sports events.
"Sudden cardiac arrest is the nation's No. 1 killer, claiming approximately 369,000 lives every year, according to American Heart Association numbers," said Al Ford, Cardiac Science General Manager and Senior Vice President of Sales / Marketing. "All too many of those SCA victims are athletes. With its ease of use and unsurpassed combination of features, the Powerheart G5 is ideal to protect their student athletes, along with faculty, staff, students, and the wider community that attend school athletic events."
Cardiac Science, an Opto Circuits group company and global leader in AEDs, is providing the AEDs for Duval in partnership with School Health Corporation, based in Hanover Park, Ill., a national, full-service provider of health supplies and services.
"We're delighted to be able to offer the Powerheart G5," said Rob Rogers, President of School Health Corporation. "With an increasing number of states mandating AEDs for schools and for school athletic programs, our customers are asking for a highly effective, reliable, and user-friendly AED that will give coaches, teachers, and anyone at the scene of a cardiac incident the greatest chance of saving a life."
The Powerheart G5 conducts daily, weekly, and monthly self-tests and has a highly visible indicator to confirm the device's Rescue Ready® status. It comes with an 8-year warranty and a 4-year performance guarantee on its Intellisense® medical grade non-rechargeable batteries.
"The Duval County Public Schools were immediately interested in the opportunity to obtain the new Powerheart G5 for their sports program," said Rob Williams, Cardiac Science Certified AED Specialist. "We look forward to working with them as they continue to enhance their AED program."
