"I'm glad we did this. We all stood together and I'm glad that we did," said Cheryl Wollner, a driver.
"Taking kids to school is very important work. Having worked all my life, I now realize that I need a union to look out for me!" said driver David Gelberg.
This vote was a rerun election, which Durham agreed to after the Teamsters filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board over company conduct in an election held in October 2009.
"Workers in this industry recognize that in these difficult economic times, they need a strong union to represent them. In New Jersey, under this economy and cuts by Governor Christie, they realized they needed a union to look out for their interests," said Fred Potter, International Union Vice President At Large and President of Local 469.
The victory is the latest in an effort to organize private school bus and transit workers across the country. Drive Up Standards is a national campaign to improve safety, service and work standards in the private school bus and transit industry. Since the campaign began in 2006, more than 25,900 drivers, monitors, aides, mechanics and attendants have become Teamsters.
