BRISTOL, Pa., Sept. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A new heat-sealable electrostatic dissipative (ESD) film that helps aerospace industry clean room crews maintain contaminant-free environments will be on display at DUNMORE Corporation's AIAA Space 2011 Conference and Exposition booth, number 325, in Long Beach, Calif., from Sept. 27-29.
DUNMORE developed the new heat-sealable DUN-SHIELD ESD film to eliminate the need for tape in aerospace industry clean rooms, where the systems for projects such as NASA's Juno and GRAIL programs are assembled. Technicians use tape, which can attract contaminating particles and residues, to hold protective bags or drapes made of the ESD film around components to protect them from contamination and static electricity during assembly. With DUN-SHIELD ESD heat sealable film, they can shape the film around the component then seal it with a heat gun, eliminating potential contamination and the need to bring another product into the clean room.
DUN-SHIELD ESD heat sealable film is based on DUNMORE's NASA approved line of ESD products, which are designed specifically for aerospace clean room operations. DUN-SHIELD ESD products exceed aerospace industry standards for cleanliness, electrostatic discharge, and non-volatile residues. Additionally, DUN-SHIELD ESD films are engineered to overcome typical processing constraints like lay-flat characteristics and the ability to make multiple sized packaging bags from a standard width roll, thereby eliminating the need to purchase and inventory various individual and expensive bags. DUNMORE is a major supplier of high-performance films to the aerospace industry for production and operational applications. DUNMORE materials can be found on the Hubble Space Telescope and most recently launched NASA/JPL Aquarius spacecraft. DUNMORE is also supplying multi-layer insulation (MLI) materials to the Mars Science Laboratory project which plans to land a large exploratory rover on the planet's surface.
"The clean room is a very fragile environment, so anything we can do to minimize contamination risks is important," said DUNMORE Vice President John Jordon. "As essential as draping and wrapping products in protective film is in the assembly process, it can also introduce contaminants and cause static electricity. With its heat sealing and low electrostatic discharge, our new DUN-SHIELD ESD film minimizes both risks."
Samples of the heat-sealable ESD product will be available at DUNMORE's AIAA booth.
