Duke Energy and Xtreme Power Announce Completion of Notrees Energy Storage Project
Largest Battery System Installed by Xtreme Power
CHARLOTTE, N.C. and AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Duke Energy, the largest electric power holding company in the United States, and Xtreme Power, a world leader in real-time power management and energy storage solutions, today announced the commencement of operations at the Notrees Energy Storage unit in western Texas.
The integrated facility at Notrees provides both environmentally friendly and flexible capacity to the Electric Reliability Council Of Texas (ERCOT), which operates the electrical grid in Texas and manages 75% of the deregulated market in the state.
The system is part of Duke Energy's Notrees 153 MW Windpower Project. The 36MW Battery Storage system is capable of deploying fast-acting reserves to support ERCOT grid reliability and helping the System Operator maintain supply and demand balance with near-instantaneous feedback of frequency changes or other unexpected events. In addition to other energy management services, the storage unit supports ultimate wind farm performance as it can absorb power from the wind farm during times of low demand or high curtailment and release power when it is most beneficial to the market.
Xtreme Power's innovative control system, XACT, will manage real-time performance and response of the system in response to site and grid conditions.
"Great partnerships with Xtreme Power, ERCOT and the U.S. Department of Energy on this project are giving us insights about this important and potentially game-changing technology," said Duke Energy Renewables President Greg Wolf. "Energy storage will benefit our renewables business, our customers and the energy sector as a whole as we study the performance of the system and begin to realize its full potential."
This project marks the eighth energy storage project installed by Xtreme Power over the past year. Xtreme Power's operational experience is unmatched in the energy storage industry, serving more than eleven customers and remotely monitoring over 250,000 hours of operations.
"We are proud to collaborate with Duke Energy to announce the complete installation of the Notrees Energy Storage unit, where the available power output makes this the largest facility of its kind," said Alan Gotcher, Chief Executive Officer of Xtreme Power. "Our XACT control system perfectly matches the needs of this project as it enables safe and reliable energy storage solutions at a low cost for grid applications."
