Dudney Retiring as Editor in Chief of AIR FORCE Magazine

ARLINGTON, Va., April 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Robert S. Dudney said today that he is retiring as editor in chief of AIR FORCE Magazine, the Air Force Association announced.

In stepping down, Dudney will end a 23-year run with AFA and a 34-year career of covering defense and foreign affairs in the nation's capital.

Adam J. Hebert, an executive editor since 2007, will succeed Dudney as its editor in chief, AFA announced. The moves will take effect on September 1.

Dudney said he is ready for the change. "It's the right time for me to move on and allow some new blood into magazine operations," he said. "Adam is extremely well-prepared to lead."

AIR FORCE is the professional journal of the Air Force Association. Dudney is only the seventh editor in chief in the magazine's 68-year history.

He joined the magazine in 1987 as a senior editor and became its second-ranking executive in 1989. He was named editor in chief in 2002. He was initiator of the popular online "Daily Report," and has also in recent years served as editor of the Mitchell Institute Press, an arm of AFA's Mitchell Institute for Airpower Studies.

Dudney, a native Texan, acquired a bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a master's degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.

Before joining AIR FORCE Magazine, he was the national security correspondent for US News & World Report in Washington, D.C. He also has headed the Defense Writers Group in Washington, D.C. since 1979.

Dudney began his long career in journalism in 1972, when he joined the Dallas, Tex., Times Herald as a general assignment reporter. At the Herald, he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and winner of an Overseas Press Club award. He came to Washington in 1976.
