Dubset's MixSCAN® Technology Platform Identifies Over 20,000 Artists Being Streamed and Not Receiving Royalties
NEW YORK, March 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of a two year trial and study of DJ mix and remix music streaming content, Dubset Media Holdings revealed today that in addition to electronic dance music content, the world's top rock, pop, hip-hop, and country artists are being sampled and streamed, in some cases hundreds of millions of times per year, within DJ mixes delivered on websites and mobile apps globally. In fact, Dubset's two-year trial has identified over twenty thousand artists whose music has been streamed within DJ mixes, streams for which rights holders are not being paid. The free sharing of this content within streamed mixes is possibly costing the music industry an estimated billion dollars a year in lost opportunity revenues.
Dubset's trial findings highlight the substantial new revenue that rights holders and DJs will be able to generate once the company's recently launched licensing and distribution platform is fully activated by labels and publishers. This platform is the first to enable legal, royalty-based mixes and remixes to be streamed by the world's leading music services currently serving hundreds of millions consumers. Dubset's trial included years of industry requirement sessions and technology builds culminating with deep tests and demonstrations of music identification, rights association, distribution, and royalty appropriation.
The trial began in late 2012 with Dubset launching Thefuture.fm, a web and mobile-based mix streaming platform, allowing DJs to upload mix content and consumers to stream it. Dubset's technology platform identifies the individual tracks within each mix and the rights holders (labels, publishers, artists) associated with each track. Dubset further tested multiple revenue models including brand sponsorships, subscriptions, and ad-supported streaming services generating and paid new royalties to thousands of underlying rights holders. The company continues to lead the industry in the study of the content DJs use, how and where they use it, who listens to it, and how it is consumed. To date, over five million mixes have been distributed and analyzed as part of the trial.
Extrapolating their trial findings to the global music market, Dubset has identified artists whose content has potentially been streamed over one billion times just within mixes. Popular artists such as Madonna andLady Gaga have been streamed more than 100 million times within mixes while even rock tracks from artists like Radiohead, Phil Collins, and Led Zeppelin are being featured in DJ Mixes and being streamed tens of millions of times a year.
The challenge presented by mix music is unique in that it represents a fraction of a track and an array of master and publishing rights holders, each with their own stake in the content sampled within a larger mix. Such a range of rights holders make it currently impossible for DJs to clear mixes for streaming. Dubset's proprietary MixSCAN® technology solves this challenge by identifying the music and rights holders of each sample, utilizing a mix license to invoke a multi-rights holder clearance process, then tracking the streaming consumption of each track sampled within the DJ mix. This innovative rights management platform that MixSCAN® powers can now deliver millions of hours of new content to music services while paying royalties to labels, publishers, artists, and DJs.
With the MixSCAN® platform now available to the market, Dubset is in the process of finalizing new mix license agreements with record labels and publishers globally. As a label or publisher license is completed, they receive access to usage dashboards and distribution rule sets governing their license and specific clearances. The mix or remix is then distributed to approved music services triggering new streaming royalties to labels and publishers. With the trial complete, the goal of Dubset and the music industry is to have the licenses implemented as expeditiously as possible so that the world's largest music services can begin offering mix and remix content in the coming months creating an even greater listening experience for the consumer while generating new and important royalties to artists.
Dubset Media Holdings CEO Bob Barbiere commented: "As an avid listener of DJ Mix content, I anecdotally knew that artists like Eminem, Jay Z, and Kanye were often featured in mixes. What became surprising is how often artists like the Four Tops, Maroon 5, and Shania Twain are sampled and streamed. Our study and technology could not have come at a better time as billions of hours of this music is streamed free and has had a real impact on the industry's current streaming revenues and royalties. Our MixSCAN® technology presents a significant new revenue opportunity for every rights holder, artist, music service, and DJ."
Andrew Goldstone of Red Light Management who manages Tiesto commented: "The application of Dubset's technology is a huge development for those of us who work in the dance music genre. The DJs who have created the mixes and the artists whose masters are embodied in those mixes both deserve to get paid for their work and what Dubset is doing is opening up a revenue stream that was previously unavailable which is obviously quite exciting." Superstar DJ David Guetta, who, like other top DJs has embraced the platform, recently called the technology "enormously beneficial to artists at every level."
The following is a select list of artists and estimated streams of their content within mixes over the past two years:
