DETROIT, May 3, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- For the second consecutive year, DTE Energy received the American Gas Association's (AGA) Safety Achievement Award for excellence in employee safety.
The award, based on safety results in 2016, recognizes companies that have the lowest number of employee injuries and illnesses as measured by the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
"Winning the award two consecutive years is a reflection of our employees' safety-first mindset, which is continually reinforced with the help of strong support from our union leadership," said Joi Harris, vice president, Gas Operations, DTE Energy.
"The safer our employees work, the safer it is for their colleagues, our customers and the public. We refer to that as being 200 percent accountable for safety."
By focusing on safety first, DTE's natural gas employees experienced a 62-percent decline in recordable injuries from 2014 through 2016.
"Safety is at the core of the service natural gas utilities provide," said Dave McCurdy, president and CEO at AGA. "The men and women who operate America's natural gas delivery systems play a critical role in safely delivering this clean energy source to the more than 69 million customers who rely on it each day. We have always stood for these values and an unending commitment to service. I applaud this year's recipients and commend them for their dedication to safety in their communities."
