DTE Energy Foundation Provides $100,000 to Meals on Wheels
Hundreds of DTE Energy employees to pack, serve and deliver holiday meals
DETROIT, Nov. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The DTE Energy Foundation announced today it will contribute $100,000 and partner with five Area Agencies on Aging to provide homebound seniors with hot Christmas holiday meals.
The effort is expected to serve holiday meals to 10,000 seniors in Detroit and its suburbs, Grand Rapids and Muskegon.
"This is a way to give back to seniors who might not otherwise be able to celebrate the holidays," said Joyce Hayes Giles, DTE Energy senior vice president, Customer Service. "It also provides our employees, retirees and their family and friends with an opportunity to volunteer and help others in the communities we serve."
The traditional day-to-day Meals on Wheels program does not provide Christmas meal delivery. The program relies on others to provide the service, and besides funding for the meals, DTE Energy employees will spend their holiday day off by packing, serving and delivering the meals.
In 2010, more than 700 employees volunteered to prepare and deliver hot, nutritious meals to homebound seniors served by the Detroit Area on Agency in five communities in and around Detroit. This year, the program will expand and employees can volunteer to pack, deliver and serve holiday meals including dinner, and in some cases, breakfast and lunch, to seniors in an area that extends from St. Clair County to Monroe and Washtenaw counties. In addition, seniors in communities in the Grand Rapids and Muskegon areas also will served. Seniors who are not homebound will be served holiday meals in congregate sites.
The DTE Energy Foundation is the philanthropic arm of DTE Energy, continuing the legacy of community support and involvement of its principal operating subsidiaries, Detroit Edison and MichCon. The Foundation directs its contributions and involvement to support initiatives dedicated to developing the human and economic potential of the communities it serves. The DTE Energy Foundation is funded fully by the shareholders of DTE Energy.
