ARLINGTON, Va., April 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- DRS Technologies CEO William J. Lynn has announced the appointment of Steven J. Cortese, an experienced executive with an extensive career in national security and legislative affairs both in government and private industry, as Executive Vice President of Washington Operations. He succeeds Vice Admiral Phillip M. Balisle, USN (Ret.), who is retiring from DRS.

Cortese will be responsible for a range of DRS core activities, including government affairs, strategic planning and business development. He will serve as the senior relationship manager with U.S. government customers in the Department of Defense and key federal agencies, international customers, and with business leaders in the defense industry.

Before joining DRS, Cortese served as Senior Vice President, Government Relations and Corporate Communications, at ATK, the aerospace, defense and commercial products company. He was responsible for all company activities in Washington, D.C., including Congressional and Pentagon relations, led the company's pursuit of Department of Defense and NASA business and helped shape its international business strategy. Cortese also led ATK Corporate Communications and was the primary interface with supply chain partners and major prime contractors in Washington. When he joined ATK in 2006, Cortese was Senior Vice President, Washington Operations.
From 2003 to 2006, Cortese was Vice President, Programs & Budgets, in the Washington Operations office of Lockheed Martin.
Before entering private industry, Cortese had an extensive career on Capitol Hill. From 1986 to 2003, he worked for the Senate Appropriations Committee. He served as both the Majority Staff Director and the Minority Staff Director for both the full Appropriations Committee and the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.
Cortese is a graduate of the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Foreign Service, Comparative & Regional Studies.
