ABOUT DR. THELMA C. HURD

Dr. Hurd has had 27 years of experience focusing on markers of breast cancer progression, special surgical techniques and health disparities in underserved populations.  She is currently a Surgical Oncologist, Associate Professor of Surgery and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics/Epidemiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.  Dr. Hurd founded and currently serves as the Director of the South Texas Esperanza y Vita Program, a breast and cervical cancer education/screening program for Hispanic women and men.  Dr. Hurd received her M.D. from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1983.  She is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and the Medical Examiners of New Jersey.  Dr. Hurd has received multiple awards including being a nine-time recipient of the Best of Doctors in America Destination and the President's Volunteer Service Award and Congressional Awards at the UN General Assembly, in recognition of her service and ongoing work in Nigeria.  She has authored and co-authored numerous publications and has given various presentations.  She is a member of several societies including the American College of Surgeons, Society of Black Academics Surgeons and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.  Dr. Hurd currently resides in San Antonio, Texas, where she enjoys skiing.
