SPRINGFIELD, Mo., May 15, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Sheldon Berkowitz of Children's Minnesota has been named the 2019 Trust Builder for Clinical Documentation Improvement. His work as the Clinical Liaison has helped achieve query response rates of 99% to 100% within the Clinical Documentation Improvement program at Children's Minnesota.
The Trust Builder Awards highlight those who have succeeded in building trust among their healthcare peers. Specifically, the awards aim to feature those in health information management, clinical documentation improvement and revenue integrity fields who are building trust successfully among multiple groups within their organizations. Dr. Berkowitz was nominated by his peers for the award siting his work with the organization's physicians, CDI professionals, coders, and even registered dietitians. His engagement as the Clinical Liaison provided clinical protocols to clarify the most challenging and high-volume queries.
"He is extremely committed to ensuring that the 'business of medicine' is as successful as the care of patients," stated Anne Tegen, Director of Health Information Management for Children's Minnesota. "As a result, there has been an increase in overturning denials, an improved perception of the importance of completed, accurate documentation by clinicians, and a clinical champion for the case management, utilization management, CDI, and coding teams."
Dr. Berkowitz's efforts include the development of query templates, customized for each patient, within the medical record. He also worked across the organization to develop a protocol for malnutrition using National Guidelines and standard terminology to reflect the necessary clinical indicators. He has and continues to provide both one-on-one and collective physician engagement as well as education to CDI and coding teams on query response optimization.
As part of Dr. Berkowitz's award, a $2,500 donation will be made in his honor to the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund.
The 2019 Health Information Management Trust Builder Award is still open for nominations with an updated announcement date for the winner of August 12, 2019. Nominations can be made at www.trusthcs.com/trustbuilder.
