Dr. Leonard Barry Smith, DDS, is recognized by Continental Who's Who
CALGARY, Alberta, Nov. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Leonard Barry Smith, DDS, is recognized by Continental Who's Who as a Pinnacle Professional in the field of Healthcare as a result of his role as a Pediatric Dentist with Dental Care for Children.
Dr. Smith received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Alberta in 1968. He completed a hospital residency at the Winnipeg Children's Hospital in 1970 and earned a Master's of Science degree and Pedodontic Dentistry certification from the Ohio State University in 1972.
Furthermore, he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, Life Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and a Life Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
In 2007, Dr. Smith founded and is the Chairman of the Board for both the Society for a Healthy Mouth Healthy Child (Alberta) and the Foundation for a Healthy Mouth, Healthy Child in Canada and the USA respectively. The stated mission is the worldwide elimination of early childhood caries.
In 2005, Dr. Smith received the Integrity Award from the Rotary Club of Calgary, Downtown Chapter and received a special achievement award from the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2014 for distinguished service and dedication to the mission and goals of the Academy.
During his 48 year career, with 44 as a Pediatric Dental Specialist, Dr. Smith has been an advocate for oral health needs of children. Throughout the years, he served a term as President of the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped 1982-83, Chief of the Dental Department at the Alberta Children's Hospital 1974-1986 and is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary. He is also the Chairman of the Dental Facility Accreditation Committee of the Alberta Dental Association and College.
He has self-published a number of books, such as, Pediatric Oral Pathology, My Smile ,The Pain Look at the Ravages of Early Childhood Caries, among others. He has worked with other doctors to author some of his works and articles, including Drs. A. Nowak and P. Casamassimo.
He is available to speak to other professionals about the reality of Early Childhood Caries and the fact that this is an infectious disease that is about more than just baby teeth.
He details the impact this preventable disease, which is now the most common, chronic infectious disease in children 5 and younger in North America has on the child, both now and in the child's future, on the impact on the family and its relationship to domestic violence, its impact on the Corporate health plans, and its impact on Society.
