Dr. Joy DeGruy to Speak at the AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library on Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome
ATLANTA, Oct. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Atlanta University Center (AUC) Robert W. Woodruff Library and Atlanta Student Movement alumni are hosting an exhibition program "Seeking to Tell a Story: Political Action from Slavery to Civil Rights" on Thursday, October 16, 2014, 4:00-6:00 p.m. Dr. Joy DeGruy, internationally renowned speaker and author of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: American's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing, will be the keynote speaker. The event is free and open to the public.
Through the lens of history, DeGruy will address the continuing impact of centuries of slavery and oppression on African-Americans. Identifying the psychological, spiritual and cultural wounds of this history, she lays the foundation for how the African-American community can use its strengths to heal. A Q&A as well as a response panel comprised of scholars in African-American studies and the humanities and social sciences will follow her presentation.
"Dr. Joy DeGruy's thought-provoking discussion is on a difficult topic but an important one. She offers critical insight into why we see repeating patterns of struggle in the African-American community and suggests how these patterns can be broken," said Loretta Parham, CEO & director of the AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library.
The exhibition program is the second year of programming for the five-year project "Seeking to Tell a Story: Political Action from Slavery to Civil Rights," which documents African-American activism, including the historic Atlanta Student Movement. The planning committee for the exhibition program includes Atlanta Student Movement alumni Lonnie King, Johnny Parham, and the Hon. Brenda H. Cole. On display from October 16 to December 12, 2014, will be an exhibit of selected materials from the Library's Archives Research Center. A virtual exhibit is currently available for viewing at http://digitalexhibits.auctr.edu. Visit www.auctr.edu for event directions and parking information.
