Dr. John W. Sutherland Honored with the SAE International John Connor Environmental Award
WARRENDALE, Pa., March 11, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dr. John W. Sutherland, Professor and Head of Environmental and Ecological Engineering at Purdue University, was honored with the SAE International John Connor Environmental Award. Dr. Sutherland received the award from 2011 SAE International President Richard E. Kleine during an SAE Indiana Section meeting in February.
Established in 2001, the award recognizes the accomplishments of an individual to promote the environmental vision of SAE International within and outside the Society. It was established to meet the demands of the ever changing environmental challenges that face manufacturers, suppliers and professionals in the global transportation industry. The award is administered by the Environmental Award Committee of the SAE Sustainable Development Program Committee.
Dr. Sutherland also holds an appointment in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. From 1987-1991 he held non-tenure track faculty positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and from 1989-91 was Vice President of a small consulting company. From 1991-2009 he held various positions at Michigan Technological University, including the Henes Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering and the Director of the Sustainable Futures Institute.
The bulk of Dr. Sutherland's research contributions have related to environmentally responsible manufacturing, and sponsors of his research have included a number of companies and government agencies. He has mentored nearly 80 students to the completion of their graduate degrees, including 20 doctoral students. He has published more than 250 papers in various journals and conference proceedings. He also is a co-author of the textbook, Statistical Quality Design and Control: Contemporary Concepts and Methods.
Dr. Sutherland is a member of SAE International, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), International Academy for Production Engineering, Institute of Industrial Engineers, American Society for Quality, Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, Alpha Pi Mu, and Pi Tau Sigma. His honors and recognitions include the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award (1992), Michigan Technological University Distinguished Teaching Award (1992), Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (1996), SAE International Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award (1999), Michigan Technological University Research Award (2000), SME Education Award (2009), ASME Dedicated Service Award (2009), and the Outstanding Lifetime Service Award from NAMRI/SME, 2010. He is a Fellow of SME and ASME.
Dr. Sutherland received his bachelor's and master's degrees in industrial engineering and his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
