Halpern, DDS, New York, NY, received the Presidential Achievement Award during the opening ceremony of 92nd Annual Meeting, Scientific Sessions and Exhibition of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, September 29, 2010 in Chicago, Ill. The award is presented to association fellows and members who have made significant long-term contributions to the specialty.

Dr. Halpern received his dental degree from Howard University College of Dentistry in Washington, DC and completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. In addition to his private practice, he is a clinical assistant professor of surgery at Weill Cornell Medical Center and an assistant attending oral and maxillofacial surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is also an assistant attending dentist at Memorial Hospital-Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Dr. Halpern has been a member and consultant to the AAOMS Committee on Practice Management and Professional Allied Staff for nine years. During that time, he was instrumental in developing business-related educational sessions for oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and in expanding and enhancing educational opportunities for the surgeons' clinical staff.
Dr. Halpern is also well known and respected in the dental community for his extraordinary work in identifying the victims of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the crash of American Airlines flight 582. His efforts were acknowledged by the dental societies of New York City, New York State and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He also received a congressional Certificate of Recognition presented in thanks for his contributions. He continues his involvement with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of New York City as a member of the Medical Examiners Special Operations Response Team.
More than 5,000 registrants, including oral and maxillofacial surgeons from around the world, attended the AAOMS Annual Meeting where they conducted association business, discussed surgical procedures, earned continuing education credits and met with dental industry suppliers.
