Geisinger president and CEO lauded for innovation, transformation of health care industry
CHICAGO, Nov. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Glenn D. Steele Jr., M.D., Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of Geisinger Health System (GHS), will accept the National Center for Healthcare Leadership's 2014 Gail L. Warden Leadership Excellence Award Thursday in Chicago. The award recognizes innovative approaches to bringing high-value and accessible health care to communities, permanently transforming and improving the field.
Nancy M. Schlichting, chief executive officer of Henry Ford Health System, will be the other recipient of NCHL's 2014 Gail L. Warden Leadership Excellence Award.
Dr. Steele – who has been named five times by Modern Healthcare as one of the "Most Powerful People in Healthcare," and its list of the "50 Most Powerful Physician Executives in Healthcare" for 2007, 2012 and 2013 – has been heralded for his innovation and drive since taking the helm at Geisinger on March 1, 2001.
During his 14 years at Geisinger, Dr. Steele has led the integrated health system to become an industry leader in patient safety, care quality and value. Also during his tenure, the health system has experienced phenomenal growth – expanding from 7,500 employees in 2001 to more than 23,000 today and merging with six Pennsylvania hospitals – all while gaining national and international recognition for its transformation of the health care industry through its advanced use of the electronic health record and the development and implementation of innovative care models, including its heralded ProvenCare program.
"Leading Geisinger has been a phenomenal opportunity that has provided our staff with outstanding opportunities to transform health care delivery. I'm extremely proud of our success in this endeavor and am honored to accept this award," said Dr. Steele. "With the commitment and dedication of our employees, Geisinger has reengineered the way many health care providers provide care and is making a difference in evolving value-based health care across the country."
In July, Dr. Steele announced that he will be stepping down as Geisinger's president and CEO in the summer of 2015. He will serve in his role as CEO through the end of the health system's fiscal year in June 2015, after which time he will continue as Chairman of xG Health Solutions, an independently operated venture based in Columbia, Maryland, that helps health care organizations across the country create value and improve quality.
Dr. Steele arrived at Geisinger from the University of Chicago, where he served as the Richard T. Crane Professor in the Department of Surgery, vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Division of Biological Sciences and the Pritzker School of Medicine. Prior to that, he was the William V. McDermott Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, president and chief executive officer of Deaconess Professional Practice Group and chairman of the Department of Surgery at New England Deaconess Hospital.
A member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Steele has served since 2012 on the United States Congressional Budget Office's panel of health advisors. He is also a member of the Roundtable on Value and Science-driven Healthcare, was recently appointed to the Committee on the Governance and Financing of Graduate Medical Education and previously served on the Committee on Reviewing Evidence to Identify Highly Effective Clinical Services (HECS).
Dr. Steele is past Chairman of the American Board of Surgery. His investigations have focused on the cell biology of gastrointestinal cancer and pre-cancer, and most recently on innovations in health delivery and financing. A prolific writer, he is the author or co-author of more than 480 scientific and professional articles.
