The award is presented to association fellows and members who have made significant long-term contributions to the specialty.

For nearly a decade Dr. Gelfand has worked tirelessly with the AAOMS Committee on Governmental Affairs and the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Political Action Committee to inform colleagues of the importance of legislative and regulatory advocacy and to raise the specialty's profile with legislative bodies at all levels. As chair of both committees, he led the development of cohesive and focused national and grassroots advocacy initiatives to monitor and respond to issues of importance to the specialty.
Dr. Gelfand received his dental degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark and completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, Ill.
He is an active participant in numerous professional organizations, frequently focusing his energies on legislative and advocacy issues. He is a past president of the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Southern California Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and San Fernando Valley Dental Society. Dr. Gelfand has been a delegate to the American Dental Association House of Delegates since 2000, and an alternate delegate and delegate to the AAOMS House of Delegates since 1994. He is a fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
More than 5,000 registrants, including oral and maxillofacial surgeons from around the world, attended the AAOMS Annual Meeting where they conducted association business, discussed surgical procedures, earned continuing education credits and met with dental industry suppliers.
